Decades of research by thousands of scientists around the world have brought a breakthrough

More than 2 million people in the world suffer from a terrible disease which, over years, makes it harder and harder for them to move.

It's called multiple sclerosis, or MS, and one of the hardest things about it has been that no one knew how it started - so it was hard to stop people getting it.

Now, after more than 40 years of intensive detective work, a team of scientists has pinpointed the likely cause. The nasty little bug behind MS turns out to be a virus.

That's already good news, because we know quite a lot about the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), which is quite common.

And it's even better news because people are already working on vaccines that could stop EBV. Which means people may no longer have to be afraid of MS.
