Problems for the ocean are problems for our whole planet. One problem is too much fishing in certain places.
Overfishing has many consequences. One is that the little sea urchin, those spiky little ball-like creatures that live underwater, is much safer from being eaten by fish.
That's great news for sea urchins. But bad news for what they eat - seaweed. Urchins have been chewing through vast forests of kelp, destroying a vital habitat for all kinds of sealife. It's also bad news for global warming because kelp can suck in huge amounts of CO2 - much more than forests on land.
So, in parts of the ocean, fewer fish means more urchins means less kelp means less biodiversity and more CO2.
In comes Brian. He was born in Japan where people like eating sea urchins. His idea? If we eat more of the urchins, the kelp can grow back quickly.
Swim below the waves in the WoW! News app this week, to find out how we can eat our way to a healthier ocean!
