A superfood for pets, that does the planet good, too

It all started with a dog called Mojo. He was a big dog...

Mojo’s owner was a young woman called Madeleine. And Madeleine was a vegetarian – that means she didn’t eat meat. One of the main reasons she didn’t eat meat was because she didn’t want to damage our planet.

Farming cows and pigs and so on for meat uses up lots of land and water and other resources. It also causes lots of pollution and adds to the greenhouse gases that are causing global warming.

Mojo

“What about Mojo?”

Madeleine was happy to do her bit by eating only fruit and vegetables. But her friends used to tease her: “What about Mojo?” they’d say.

And it was true. Mojo ate a lot of meat. As much meat as a person. He loved his sausages! So Madeleine was sad when she realised that all the good she was doing for the planet was being undone by Mojo. What to do?

Then, it came to her. She phoned her best friend Paola. “Paola,” she yelped. “We’re going to feed Mojo with insects!”

And straight away Paola, who’d been best friends with Madeleine since they were eight, agreed that they would do it together.

Insect biscuits

Today, Paola and Madeleine run a pet food company called Tomojo – in honour of Madeleine’s dog Mojo. And more and more people are buying their food made with insects instead of meat.

The insects are grown in farms. It doesn’t take up much space and they’re packed with protein, which cats and dogs need, just like we do. The insects are turned into a kind of flour that Madeleine and Paola turn into biscuits for pets.

“Insects are a superfood,” for dogs and cats, Paola told WoW! News.

And if it’s good for the planet, it’s also been good for Paola and Madeleine.

“I’m really happy because I have a good reason to go to work every day,” says Paola. “And I get to work with my best friend. We laugh a lot!”
