A Christmas tree that's truly "green"

Rent one? Make one? We share our ideas for seasonal decoration that's looks after the environment.

Christmas is coming and it'll soon be time to choose your tree. We prefer real trees over artificial ones. That's because, although you can re-use them, artificial trees have a big carbon footprint because they're typically made of plastic and come from a long way away.

Real trees also create some problems for the planet. Trees soak up carbon, so cutting them down isn't great - even those that have been planted specially for Christmas. The ones that cause the least harm are those grown with organic methods - no chemicals - and ideally close to where you live - so minimum transport.

But we've got three alternatives that might suit you and your family.

Rent-a-tree

Instead of a tree that you have to throw in the bin (or, better, on the compost heap) after the holidays, did you know that in many places you can hire a tree? There are companies which will deliver you a living tree in a pot, not one that's been cut down. Then, after Christmas, they'll come and pick it up again and look after it until next year. That's a lot less waste.

A wooden tree

Hang on! Aren't all trees made of wood?! Well, yes, of course. But we're thinking of a trend to make artificial trees out of wood instead of plastic. Some of them are really quite beautiful. They can be used year after year. And they're sturdy enough to carry all the decorations you can imagine (or make yourself).

The home-made tree

Why don't you make your own tree out of odds and ends and rubbish that you've got lying around at home? This is certainly the "greenest" option. No need for anything to be transported. Just use whatever you can find - cardboard, leaves, plastic bottles... It's a great way to spend family time as the winter draws in. You're sure to be proud of your creation - and you can surprise visiting family and friends.

We hope these ideas inspire you. If so, don't forget to send us a picture of your tree at info@wow-news.eu. We'd love to share it on our social networks!
