A sunny, windy holiday weekend offer good news for global warming efforts.
Burning gas, coal and oil to make electricity emits CO2 which is warming our weather and causing lots of problems.
We’re generating more and more electricity from clean and renewable sources, like wind farms and solar panels.
You can find the ESO news release here and an article about it in The Guardian here.
There’s a fascinating independent website here, where you can track real-time carbon intensity of various European electricity systems. You will note, for example, that coal-heavy Poland has high emissions while France, which uses a lot of carbon-free nuclear in its mix, is consistently low.
And if you’re really into it, National Grid ESO has an app that lets you track the carbon intensity of electricity right now in the different regions of England, Scotland and Wales. (In case you’re wondering, the fourth nation of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, has a separate electricity grid which it shares with the Irish Republic.)
